Flag Person Practical Training and Competency Confirmation

Notice to all Flaggers & Employers:

Upon completion of the theory portion of the Flag person training, all workers are required to complete a practical evaluation on their jobsite.

Supervisors are required to evaluate worker competency based on the checklist provided to the worker at the completion of the classroom day.  This checklist and observational assessment will determine if a worker can safely perform the duties of a flag person on a roadway or active construction site and it must be done before they can act in that capacity.

A temporary card is issued to each worker at the completion of the classroom training to use while they complete this practical evaluation and those cards are NOT to be used beyond that for ongoing work. Valid only for only 8 months from date of issue.  Extension can be requested directly from Safety Services Manitoba.

The training program outline is as follows

1.     Classroom theory

2.   Practical Evaluation

Ø  Must be completed as soon as possible following the classroom training.  The completed checklist can be sent back to SSM via email/fax

3.    Permanent wallet card will be issued along with a wall certificate and a hard hat sticker.  (training must be recertified within 3 years)

Supervisors are required to ensure that all PPE and required equipment are on site for use during the practical evaluation and must provide 100% supervision for anyone using a temporary card.

SSM will endeavor to provide a permanent card as quickly as possible upon receipt of the completed and signed checklist and if necessary will pdf back via email until the hard copy can be delivered.
