This session is designed to aid operators in the practical aspects of operating and maintaining water distribution systems. Topics include the components and characteristics of distribution system facilities, operating and maintaining distribution systems, maintaining water quality in the system, disinfecting new and repaired facilities as well as service connection delivery to consumers.

According to the CDC, distribution system deficiencies continue to be a major contributor to drinking water outbreaks and outbreak-associated illnesses. The piecemeal nature of some infrastructure development may act as a contributing factor to the occurrence of these cross-connections, highlighting the importance of distribution system monitoring and adherence to guidelines for the prevention of backflow of non-potable water into the potable water supply. Challenges with aging water infrastructure are ongoing, and efforts to understand the number of illnesses associated with drinking water distribution system deficiencies are needed.
